The Territory is not the Map: Hyper Realism and the New Immersion Paradigm

The games of today unsurprisingly strive to mimic the linear, authored structures of previous generations of media largely because gamers and game developers have grown up in a world where those media are culturally dominant. That is changing. As our media become more richly interactive and as our experience of the world becomes increasingly fragmented and parallelized, a new media culture is disintegrating the old. Games of the future will reflect this cultural shift by themselves becoming more fragmentary, more parallelized, and less focused on rich simulation and traditional notions of immersion.

This talk examines the potential long-term future of gaming by looking at the accelerating convergence between rising technologies and competing media from the internet, games, music and narrative media to augmented reality and the prominence of portable wireless devices.

SCAD-Atlanta on Fox5 News Live 10/19/2009

SCAD-Atlanta is showing off our new high tech digital media center in northeast Atlanta on Fox 5 News Live on 10/19/2009.

Check out the segment we showed the AR zombie project (ARhrrr) developed from my interactive game project class (collaborated with Georgia Tech) . The anchors in the studio did not understand the game but the reporter, Stacy, seemed to get it. She was having a hard time to explain it so she kept on referring everything “thingy” (this thingy, that thingy) and her colleagues made a little joke about it. Well, the technology and the concept of this game is so unconventional that IT IS HARD to explain. I think she did well reporting this segment.  For those viewers who feel confused, come to SCAD-Atlanta and play the game  – you will get it once you play it (and I bet you will love it)!

A Blog Finally…

Well, I am not really keen about the idea of blogging, but I think it’s about time to setup a blog of my own for the sake of comforting my very fragile ego (why don’t you blog? why don’t you have a blog? why don’t you blah blah blah). Don’t get me wrong, I do like the idea of having my own little big planet in the blog galaxy where I can be my own imaginary king. Here you will find information about me, my projects, my students’ work, information about the courses I teach at SCAD, information about SCAD ITGM (Interactive Design & Game Development), 3D & game development tutorials, and my random thoughts and ideas.

WELCOME to my blog!
